These Irish name elements are associated with this record in the Logainm glossary.
An element’s translation is a clue, rather than a complete explanation of the name. Its form and meaning depend on local history and the full Irish name.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland records a deserted settlement at Kilcornan, identified from aerial reconnaissance in July 1970. Eight rectangular plots lie on either side of a narrow grass-covered street, each containing one or two houses, some with internal divisions. The first-edition Ordnance Survey map depicted three roofed buildings and part of the roadway. The survey suggests a seventeenth- or eighteenth-century date from this evidence and the regular layout, rather than assigning it securely to the medieval period. It also records the local name “the sixteen tenants”. [2]
