A nineteenth-century survey describes a mixed landscape of bog, pasture and cultivated ground.
These Irish name elements are associated with this record in the Logainm glossary.
An element’s translation is a clue, rather than a complete explanation of the name. Its form and meaning depend on local history and the full Irish name.
The description attributed to John O’Donovan in the historic name books places Meelick at the western end of Killosolan parish. Of its approximately 244 acres, about 100 were bog; the rest supported cultivation and pasture. The same account reports houses and roads in good repair. These are observations from the nineteenth-century survey, rather than a description of the townland today. [2]
Census figures refer to the matched historical census area for each year. Boundaries and spellings can change over time.
