Place & story
The Bellews and the making of a town
The Bellews came from County Louth and acquired Galway lands under settlement patents dated 1677 and 1678. University of Galway's Landed Estates account credits them with founding Mountbellew and building its principal house. The family remained Catholic while participating in commercial activities such as flour milling. Estate records listed by the university include rent books, labour accounts and farm accounts, which can extend research beyond the owners' genealogy. These surviving categories of records offer different perspectives on the work and tenancies that supported the town and surrounding estate.[2]
People & connections
From a free school to an agricultural college
Christopher Dillon Bellew invited the Franciscan brothers to Mountbellew in 1818 and laid the foundation stone of their school in 1824. The town's heritage guide records free primary education for boys and later preparatory teaching for entry to teacher-training college. Agricultural education followed in 1904, supported by Sir Henry Grattan Bellew and the Department of Agriculture. The first agricultural show was held in the same year. These institutions developed from successive local initiatives, linking classroom teaching with practical farming and the exchange of knowledge between generations.[3]
Saint Mary’s and its earlier church
A church designed by Dominick Madden for Christopher Dillon Bellew opened on Christmas Day 1822. The heritage guide describes its later gift to the community and the rebuilding dedicated to the Virgin Mary in 1888. Saint Mary's Gothic Revival form includes limestone walls, transepts and a graveyard around the building. Vaulted stonework in the entrance and crossing contrasts with the timber gallery. The earlier foundation and later rebuilding are separate stages: the date associated with one does not explain all of the architectural fabric visible today.[3]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
