Place & story
Kiltoom and Cam
Samuel Lewis's 1837 account records Kiltoom's Church of Ireland vicarage united with Camma by an act of council in 1784. The rectory belonged to the Incorporated Society, and the parish's tithes were divided between that body and the vicar. This arrangement joined the administration of neighbouring parishes while retaining a distinction between the recipients of church income. [2]
The Lysters at New Park
The senior branch of the Lyster family lived at New Park in Kiltoom parish; its male line ended in 1806. Their wider estate extended into Cam and Taghmaconnell as well as Kiltoom. The University of Galway's estate history records its passage into the Court of Chancery by the middle of the nineteenth century. New Park itself passed by marriage to the Smyths of Barbaville. A house restored as a hotel
New Park stands in Carrowmurragh townland. It was valued at £38 at Griffith's Valuation and was Marcus Anthony Levinge's home in 1906. The university's property record traces its continued association with the Levinges into about the 1940s, when the roof was removed. Paddy Kenny restored the house as a hotel in the early 1970s, giving the former residence a new commercial use. [4]
