The census distinguishes this Clare barony locality from Bullaun near Loughrea.
A reliable full-name meaning has not been established here. The recorded Irish and English forms are given without an unsupported translation.
The original 1911 census records Bullaun in Kilmoylan parish and electoral division, in Galway’s barony of Clare. It lists eighty-one residents, forty-three male and thirty-eight female, across eighteen inhabited houses. Three further houses were uninhabited. Its area was recorded as 753 acres and six perches. [2]
The same table gives fifty-nine people and ten houses in 1891, followed by sixty-three people and ten houses in 1901. By 1911 both the population and the number of houses had increased. The figures apply to this Kilmoylan townland, rather than the Bullaun parish and village associated with Loughrea. They establish the scale of the change without explaining its cause. [2]
Census figures refer to the matched historical census area for each year. Boundaries and spellings can change over time.
