Place & story

Dean Collyn’s almshouse

Dean John Collyn founded an almshouse on 2 November 1478. Its elderly residents were expected to pray for their benefactors and deceased townspeople. The former institution became the Irish Wake Museum, officially opened on 16 June 2023. Its rooms now present changing customs surrounding death, while recalling the building's earlier charitable purpose. [2]

People & connections

Bishop Foy’s pupils and apprentices

The Representative Church Body Library holds a register documenting the charity school endowed through Bishop Nathaniel Foy's will. It includes pupil admissions from 1714 to 1902 and apprenticeships for Waterford boys and girls between 1711 and 1757. Entries record masters and apprenticeship terms, while school admissions often identify a pupil's father and occupation. [3]

The cellar beneath the palace

Archaeologist Órla Scully reported an earlier vaulted cellar beneath the Bishop's Palace during its restoration in 2010. The stone chamber had a wicker-centred roof and a wall cupboard. It was measured by laser rather than entered. Scully suggested that it might belong to the palace preceding the building erected in 1743, preserving that interpretation as tentative. [4]
