Place & story
Land beside Lough Derravaragh
Samuel Lewis described Stonehall in 1837 as a parish of 2,441 statute acres with 632 inhabitants. Arable land and pasture shared the farming landscape, alongside bog and marsh. Knockbody hill overlooked Lough Derravaragh, while the remains of an older parish church stood beside a smaller lake. [2]
Church and curacy
Stonehall formed part of the Church of Ireland union of Taghmon, also called Multifarnham. Its church had been built in 1809 with a £600 grant from the Board of First Fruits. The perpetual curacy included Stonehall and Multifarnham, but the glebe-house built in 1817 and its glebe were in Multifarnham parish. The civil and church districts therefore had different boundaries. [2]
