Place & story
A settlement beside the crossing
Kilcullen Bridge developed after a bridge was constructed across the Liffey in 1319. The archaeological assessment associates that work with Maurice Jake, a canon of Kildare Cathedral. The new settlement gradually displaced the older town uphill as the principal trading centre. By 1837 Lewis described one main street, mostly on the western bank, with a Saturday market and several annual fairs.[2][3]
The older centre uphill
Old Kilcullen preserves the remains of an early ecclesiastical settlement, including high crosses and a round tower. A later borough incorporated that church site and received a market charter in 1403. After destruction in the fifteenth century, Roland FitzEustace built a castle and obtained a grant for town defences. The archaeological account distinguishes this older walled settlement from the bridge town that became the focus of later growth.[3]

Donnelly’s fight becomes a pageant
In 1953 the Kilcullen Tóstal Committee staged a recreation of Dan Donnelly’s famous bout against George Cooper at Donnelly’s Hollow on the Curragh. Local performers took the roles of boxers and supporters, with J. Berney playing Donnelly. A newspaper report preserved by the county library describes boxing, wrestling and judo demonstrations following the pageant. Jim Byrne junior, the local boxing committee and military helpers organised an event that turned sporting memory into a shared public spectacle.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
