These Irish name elements are associated with this record in the Logainm glossary.
An element’s translation is a clue, rather than a complete explanation of the name. Its form and meaning depend on local history and the full Irish name.
Donald Murphy’s archaeological monitoring between July and October 2020 exposed field ditches and drains at northern Killashee. Large ditches ran roughly northwest to southeast, with smaller channels feeding into them. One channel was stone-lined; another appears to have been added later to connect it with a main ditch. The arrangement suggests efforts to improve drainage towards existing wet ditches along the field edges. [2]
Finds ranged from the thirteenth to nineteenth centuries, with most dating to the seventeenth and eighteenth. Murphy placed the principal use of the drainage system in the early eighteenth to nineteenth centuries and considered it probably agricultural. The oldest finds therefore do not establish the construction date of every ditch. [2]
