Place & story
The castle and its enclosed court
Ballyragget Castle consists of a rectangular tower within a walled courtyard, with round towers at the corners. T. Lyng's architectural account describes loopholes defending the approaches and entrances, and a raised wall-walk around the enclosure. These features made the court part of the defensive system rather than merely a space beside the residence. The same study identifies a remodelled upper room with a fireplace bearing the initials G. M. and the date 1591, associated with Grissel Mountgarret. That surviving detail records a later phase in a building whose original construction is less securely dated.[2][3]
Folklore & tradition
Margaret FitzGerald and the remembered chair
Local tradition attributes the castle's building to Margaret FitzGerald, wife of Piers Butler, eighth earl of Ormond. Lyng records a stone seat in the watchtower known as Margaret's Chair and as the wishing chair. The attribution belongs to a wider body of stories about a formidable countess, whose historical influence became entangled with tales of cruelty and supernatural power. The Women's Museum of Ireland notes that her reputation as a castle builder is difficult to measure precisely. The tradition is part of Ballyragget's cultural history, but it should not turn every later story into a documented event in Margaret's life.[3][4]
Folklore & tradition
Ragget’s ford in an 1884 account
P. M. Egan's illustrated Kilkenny guide, published in 1884, records a story about the man said to have given Ballyragget its name. In that version, an Anglo-Norman named Ragget loses a battle near the river and is beheaded at a stone pointed out locally. Egan presents the account as tradition. It is evidence that the story circulated in the nineteenth century, rather than proof of the battle or execution. The town's older river crossing and its family names supplied a setting around which later inhabitants explained the landscape.[5]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
