Place & story

A fair charter without fairs

Kiltegan held a patent authorising eight fairs each year, yet Samuel Lewis reported in 1837 that none took place. His account describes a village of twenty-two houses with a dispensary and a peace-preservation police station. Another police station stood at Fortgranite. The unused fair rights distinguish what the settlement was legally permitted to host from the activities Lewis actually recorded. [2]

Building and enlarging the parish church

The Board of First Fruits supported the church through both a £500 gift and a £320 loan. Lewis describes a tower with battlements and a spire, followed by an enlargement in 1826 costing £1,200, half supplied by the Board. The adjoining glebe house also received grant and loan assistance in 1816. These successive payments record the financial effort behind the parish’s early nineteenth-century church buildings. [2]

High Park before the Victorian estates

Lewis identifies High Park as E. H. Westby’s residence and reports that its earlier mansion burned during the 1798 rebellion. He also recorded an antiquarian discovery there: an earthenware urn containing ashes and bones, found when a rath was opened several years before his survey. This is a nineteenth-century report of a find, without a modern excavation record establishing its date. [2]
