The rural townland appears separately from neighbouring Dungarvan Glebe in the census.
These Irish name elements are associated with this record in the Logainm glossary.
An element’s translation is a clue, rather than a complete explanation of the name. Its form and meaning depend on local history and the full Irish name.
Dungarvan had ninety-four inhabitants in 1911, fifty-four male and forty female. Twenty-five of its twenty-seven houses were occupied and two were empty. Its population had been 104 in 1891 and 106 in 1901. The table places the townland in Dungarvan parish and Gowran barony, under Bennettsbridge electoral division and Thomastown dispensary district and Poor Law Union. Its recorded area was 487 acres and thirty-five perches. [2]
Gowran National School’s own history records an amalgamation with Dungarvan in 1967. The receiving school’s building dated from 1958 and gained an extension in 1979. This later connection links Dungarvan’s educational history with neighbouring Gowran; it does not place the Gowran school building within Dungarvan townland. [3]
