Place & story
Ore, charcoal and the lakeside forge
Drumshanbo's early industry drew on the resources around Lough Allen. Lewis recorded iron ore gathered along the lake's eastern shore and in streams descending from Sliabh an Iarainn. Nearby woodland supplied charcoal, while local limestone served as a flux in smelting. Iron from a small blast furnace was taken to the village and forged into bars. These works had ceased by 1765, well before Lewis's visit, but their history explains the close relationship between the settlement, the wooded valleys and the iron-bearing hills.[2]
People & connections
Joe Mooney and An Tóstal
Joseph Mary Mooney helped organise Leitrim's traditional arts through Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, serving at county and national level and supporting local fleadhanna. He was also a driving force behind Drumshanbo's An Tóstal festival, which began in 1953. While the wider national festival initiative faded in many places, Drumshanbo maintained its celebration. Leitrim Library's recordings, photographs and programmes preserve evidence of the event and the musicians and singers who appeared there. Mooney's work combined elected public service with sustained cultural volunteering.[3]
A summer school in his memory
After Mooney died in 1988, a local committee established a traditional music summer school to honour his work. Founded in 1989, it brought teaching, performance, singing and dancing together in Drumshanbo. The local-history project records the importance of Leitrim repertoires within its international gathering: tutors teach tunes and dances associated with the county, including the Lough Allen set. Archive footage also preserves a 2005 visit to the cottage of flute player John McKenna, connecting classroom learning with particular musicians and places.[3][4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
