Place & story
The riverside banks
The King’s Island flood-relief project includes the earth embankments along the island’s northern, eastern and western sides. Both the Shannon and Abbey River are tidal here. These banks belong to a wider system that also includes quay walls around the more urban southern part of the island. [2]
From flooding to new works
Limerick City and County Council records severe flooding in spring 2014, when water overtopped defences and passed through breaches. A later scheme combined new earth embankments and walls with repairs to quay walls and drainage works. The council dates the start of construction to October 2024. This is the chronology of the island-wide scheme, including the northern banks. [3]
