The Fitzgerald family’s departure
Thomas Fitzgerald, great-grandfather of US President John F. Kennedy, left Bruff for Boston in 1852. The family Bible that travelled with him became part of a much larger public story: Kennedy used the Fitzgerald Bible when taking his presidential oath in January 1961. The presidential library confirms its role at the inauguration. Bruff's connection runs through Kennedy's maternal family, rather than through a claim that the president was born here. His grandfather John Fitzgerald, known as Honey Fitz, later became mayor of Boston.[2][3]
A courthouse becomes a place of remembrance
Bruff's former courthouse was restored by the local heritage group as a visitor and heritage centre. Caroline Kennedy attended its opening in June 2013, when it was named for Thomas Fitzgerald. The visit included an opportunity to inspect church records relating to the family. Those records give the connection a documentary foundation, alongside the later commemorations. The town's heritage trail places the courthouse among a wider group of sites, including the churches, former constabulary barracks, schools and Collins' Well, encouraging a reading of Bruff beyond a single celebrated family.[4][5]
The making of the Sean Wall monument
The Sean Wall monument was designed by Albert Power in 1931, carved by Leo Broe in the early 1950s and unveiled in 1952. Its larger-than-life Volunteer commemorates Wall and other members of the East Limerick Brigade killed during the War of Independence. The architectural inventory notes that the organising committee brought together former opponents from the Civil War. Surviving Wall family papers also document the long fundraising effort and its many contributors. The monument therefore records both the people named on its plinth and the later work of creating a shared public memorial.[6][7]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
