Place & story
A grant for the town walls
A charter of 1358 granted Caherconlish twenty years of murage, allowing money to be raised for its defences. Lewis recorded this evidence of its earlier status, alongside memories of castles and a college whose site survived in the name College Field. William III camped here on 7 August 1690 on the way to besiege Limerick, and Ginkell followed in 1691. By 1837 Caherconlish was a smaller settlement with fairs, a police station and about 120 houses.[2]
The Gabbett vault and older church
The ruined church on Main Street dates to 1770 but incorporates older fabric. It remained in use until 1871. Its tower and octagonal spire preserve an elegant skyline above the graveyard. An inscription records that William Gabbett established the family vault beneath the chancel around 1670. The building therefore combines the history of a particular local family with the changing parish church, retaining carved limestone details even after the loss of its roof.[3]

Edward Henry Carson's new church
A replacement Church of Ireland building began in 1866 and was consecrated in November 1871. Architect Edward Henry Carson designed a Gothic Revival church with a decorated porch, vestry and eastern apse. Marble columns flank the main entrance, and a rose window adds elaborate stone and glass work. A Limerick builder named Cavanagh carried out the construction. Later converted into a private house, the building preserves the craftsmanship of this Victorian investment in the village.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
