Luke Collins and the Mount
The Limerick Diocesan Heritage Project connects the name Mountcollins with Luke Collins, a priest who served this area and Abbeyfeale from the 1730s until his death in 1775. It records that he celebrated Mass in a building on the hill known as the Mount, the site of the later parish church. The account identifies a particular local ministry behind the English place name, rather than deriving it only from the surname's wider history.[2]
Relief roads and a changing parish
The parish of Tournafulla–Mountcollins was formed in 1838 from part of Killeedy. During the Famine, new roads were laid around Mountcollins as relief works. Land reclamation also changed the district in the middle of the nineteenth century. The diocesan account describes a settlement formerly concentrated along a road, within a boggy landscape bounded by hills. These changes in routes and land use help explain the development of the village and its surrounding farms.[2]
Our Lady of the Assumption
The present church was built in 1859 and extended in 1954–1955. Its eight-bay nave, entrance porch, side sacristy and four-stage bell tower reflect a building enlarged over time. Roughcast walls, buttresses and a slate roof give it a comparatively plain exterior, while the open upper belfry has trefoil-headed openings. The church's surviving form should therefore be understood as the product of both nineteenth-century construction and substantial twentieth-century work.[3]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
