Place & story
A settlement behind the name
Palatine’s English name recalls families who came from German-speaking lands in the early eighteenth century. Carlow County Council’s local area plan places their arrival in the district between 1709 and 1711 and estimates the settlement at fifteen to twenty families. The older name Palatinetown preserved that migration in the village’s everyday identity. The council account connects the settlement with the nearby Burton Hall estate, rather than treating the granite cottages visible today as the original migrants’ houses.[2]
People & connections
Benjamin Burton and the fairs
Benjamin Burton served as a Palatine commissioner in 1709 and became a local landlord. The council’s historical account records that he obtained a patent for four fairs, with the March fair continuing into later times. It also identifies a constabulary station in the village and the close connection between village activity and Burton Hall demesne. These details place Palatine within an estate economy as well as a migration story.[2]
Eight cottages in four pairs
The estate cottages in Killyshane are dated 1866, more than a century after the original settlement. The architectural inventory records eight homes arranged as four semi-detached pairs, each with a two-bay front, a single main storey and a dormer attic. Granite façades give the group its distinctive material character. Their repeated form makes them a particularly legible part of the village’s nineteenth-century building history.[3]
Palatine House and its pike
Palatine House stands among the southern cottages and continues the village’s public-house tradition. Carlow Tourism dates it to 1866 and draws attention to a pike engraved above the door, interpreting the motif as a reference to the United Irishmen’s rebellion. The carved symbol places a memory of political conflict on a building better known for everyday sociability. The interpretation belongs to the local tourism account rather than an identified original commission.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
