Place & story
A different kind of company village
Derraghan was one of seven housing schemes associated with planner Frank Gibney and Bord na Móna’s postwar development programme. Architect Fergal Mac Cabe describes its roadside cottages as a smaller, simpler arrangement than the enclosed greens and ambitious layouts of the other schemes. [2]
Building the houses
Engineer Sean Mc Namara recalled supervising the Mount Dillon housing schemes. At Derraghan, Kelly’s of Mullingar built ten bungalows and two terraces of two-storey houses. His account describes how existing water pipes and sewers from an earlier start were reused; water came from the works borehole through a raised tank. [3]
