Maria's education at home
Maria Edgeworth returned to the family estate at Edgeworthstown in 1782 after schooling in England. Her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, introduced her to subjects including law, economics, science and European history. She became his assistant and intellectual correspondent, while maintaining connections with the network of inventors and thinkers known as the Lunar Group. Her first publication, Letters for Literary Ladies in 1795, challenged the argument that women should neither write nor be educated to think independently.[2]
Children learning together
Richard Lovell established a school at Edgeworthstown in 1816 where children of different denominations could learn together. Financial difficulties threatened the experiment, but Maria's assistance helped it remain open until 1834. Education commissioners inspected it in 1826 and reported favourably on the shared schooling of Protestant and Catholic pupils. The school placed an educational idea into local practice, making the town a place where discussions about learning could be tested in a classroom.[3]
A schoolhouse becomes a museum
The Maria Edgeworth Centre occupies another former school, built in 1840 with Maria among its patrons. The Edgeworth Society acquired the building and developed the museum, which opened in 2019. Its collections include books once owned by the family and a first edition of Practical Education, published in 1798. Keeping these objects in a school building connects the family's written ideas with a setting devoted to education, while preserving the story of the community's work to establish the centre.[4]
