Place & story

People & connections

J. Woolsey’s brewery

Samuel Lewis recorded 115 houses and 611 inhabitants at Castlebellingham in 1837. The village stood on the River Glyde and the Dublin–Belfast mail-coach road. Its brewery and large malthouse, owned by J. Woolsey, employed about seventy people and produced the ale for which the place was known. Annual fairs traded in cattle and linen. The brewery was therefore one important workplace within a settlement also sustained by road traffic, farming and local exchange. [2]

A castellated entrance screen

The castle's former entrance screen dates to around 1820. A central carriage arch is flanked by taller castellated towers and lower screen walls, creating an elaborate boundary between estate and village. Loophole-like windows, battlements and carved details make the structure appear defensive, although it served as an entrance feature. Its architectural form is a record of the estate's nineteenth-century presentation and should be distinguished from the earlier history of the castle itself. [3]

The former village school

The old schoolhouse on Dublin Road dates to around 1860. Its tall round-headed sash windows and high classroom volume preserve the character of its educational use, despite later conversion to a house. An adjoining domestic block and successive extensions show how accommodation was added and adapted. Set back behind a stone boundary wall and iron gate, the building represents another part of village life beside the brewery and estate entrance: the provision of local schooling. [4]
