Place & story

A lease in 1792

The National Library's Bruen collection lists a lease dated 20 August 1792 from Henry Bruen of Oakpark to Peter Johnstown of Nurney. It concerned 85 acres at Nurney, granted for three lives at a rent of £193 12s 3d. The surviving document is catalogued as MS 29,777/1. [2]

Rent rolls and arrears

A Bruen account volume covering November 1792 to May 1793 includes Nurney among the estate's holdings. The library catalogue identifies part of Nurney held at will by Peter Johnson and records separate columns for tenants, payments and observations about leases or arrears. Nearby denominations in the rental include Ballyryan, Orchard and Old Town. [3]

The parish living

In 1837 Samuel Lewis described Nurney's Church of Ireland rectory and vicarage as attached to the precentorship of Leighlin, with the bishop appointing its incumbent. Tithes amounted to just over £230. In the Roman Catholic organisation, Nurney belonged to the Dunleckney union or district. [4]
