An estate record connects the Castlehill residence with holdings extending into Erris.
A reliable full-name meaning has not been established here. The recorded Irish and English forms are given without an unsupported translation.
The University of Galway’s Landed Estates record identifies Castlehill as a residence of the Walsh family. It records that the family inherited part of the Cormack estate in the late 1830s, including land in Crossmolina parish and in the Erris parishes of Kilcommon and Kilmore. In 1876 John Cormack Walsh owned 6,472 acres in County Mayo. That figure describes his countywide property, rather than the area of Castlehill townland. [2]
The same record states that the Congested Districts’ Board purchased more than one thousand acres of Walsh property in November 1906, followed by part of the Iniskea Islands in 1907. These transactions concern the wider estate associated with Castlehill; they do not establish that all the home townland was sold. [2]
Census figures refer to the matched historical census area for each year. Boundaries and spellings can change over time.
