Place & story
A centre for local life
Balla Community Resources Development dates its establishment to 1996 and the official opening of its community centre to 2000. The organisation describes a building serving several generations: a hall and stage, meeting rooms and classrooms accommodate activities ranging from pipe-band practice and youth theatre to training courses. Its community kitchen also provides space for small food businesses and local family gatherings. [2]
Opening the old woods
Balla Town Park and Western Forestry Co-op began preparing their NeighbourWood application in spring 2015. The co-op’s account describes thirty-five acres of former estate woodland where spreading laurel had blocked access and inhibited natural regeneration. Removing it exposed older oaks and made room for further woodland management. The project included three thousand new trees, thinning crowded growth, improved paths, a rowan grove, and boxes for bats and owls. These were deliberate changes to an inherited wooded landscape. [3]
