Place & story

A farm for agricultural training

Bailieborough’s Model House opened as an agricultural training school in 1847, with a forty-eight-acre farm attached. Leslie McKeague’s local history records accommodation for eight boarding pupils, who learned farming through practical work as well as theory. The building later housed vocational classes before demolition made way for a new technical school, linking two forms of occupational education. [2]

The Model Schools and later classrooms

Sir John Young funded Model Schools in 1848, providing separate boys’ and girls’ sections, with an infants’ department added later. Catholic pupils withdrew in 1885 and subsequently attended Saint Anne’s school. The local account records further movements between buildings as numbers increased: boys returned to rooms in the Model School in 1928 when Saint Anne’s could no longer accommodate them. [2]

Milk from Millmount to a cooperative

The Bailieborough Central Cooperative Creamery was established in 1902, with origins in Mary Simpson’s Millmount Dairy at Crochnahattina. A new creamery followed in 1903 on land provided by W. Smyth. McKeague records a construction cost of £559 and an opening in 1904, initially receiving 350 gallons of milk daily. The sequence connects a named local dairy operator with the cooperative’s development. [2]
