Linen in the local landscape
Flax growing and linen production formed an important part of Shercock's working history. The local development group's historical survey identifies Milltown's ruined flax mill and place names such as Bleach Road and Bleach Cross as reminders of that industry. Later textile manufacturing took a different form: the Tabetex factory was established in Shercock in 1960 by Luciano Vergnano. The two episodes connect the district with both the older agricultural economy of flax and the manufacture of upholstery fabrics in a modern factory.[2]
Remembering the Lough Sillan tragedy
On 25 July 1878, a boat carrying staff and pupils from Cullies National School sank on Lough Sillan, killing seventeen people. The victims included teacher Michael McCabe and his wife Margaret. In July 2004, relatives and local residents gathered for the unveiling of a memorial bearing the victims' names, near the lake shore. Contemporary reporting of that ceremony records a guided retracing of their final journey. The memorial makes a specific community loss part of the landscape encountered by later visitors to the lake.[3]
A wooden figure from Ralaghan bog
The carved wooden figure known as Ralaghan Man was found in a bog near Shercock in 1930. The community history identifies it as a yew carving and records Adolf Mahr's announcement of the discovery. It entered the National Museum of Ireland, where it features in the Kingship and Sacrifice exhibition. The museum suggests that anthropomorphic carvings such as this may have served as boundary markers. That is an archaeological interpretation of the object's use, rather than a surviving account of the person or deity it represented.[2][4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
