Merchants at the crossing
Athboy's main street grew westwards from its river crossing, branching at its western end. A charter of 1407 authorised a merchants' guild, and trade reached England through Drogheda. The medieval town received grants to support its defences, including permission in 1408 to tax outside merchants for their upkeep. Those walls faced serious tests: Athboy was attacked and burned in 1443. The town's position between Anglo-Norman and Gaelic territories brought commercial opportunities as well as exposure to conflict.[2]
Corn markets and a school upstairs
Lewis's 1837 account records a large flour mill and a Thursday market supplied with grain and provisions. The market house had an educational role too, accommodating the parish school under the Earl of Darnley's patronage. The town had once elected two members to the Irish parliament, but its corporation fell out of use after the Union. These details place economic and civic change within the buildings and weekly routines of Athboy.[3]
The Hill of Ward's successive enclosures
Just east of Athboy, Tlachtga occupies the summit of the Hill of Ward. Excavations in 2014–16 investigated a complex sequence beneath the visible banks and ditches. The researchers identified a large earlier enclosure, probably constructed in the Bronze Age and filled during the Iron Age, partly overlain by the later monument. A smaller enclosure also preceded the surviving earthworks. Their work established that the hill's imposing form resulted from successive episodes of construction, rather than one single building campaign.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
