Place & story
A lease in Lower Grange
Michael F. McGraw’s examination of a lease dated 4 May 1839 identifies Thomas P. Firman as the landowner and Thomas Long as the farmer leasing land in Lower Grange, Holycross parish. The agreement covered a little over twenty-two Irish plantation acres. Its duration depended on thirty-one years or the surviving lives of three named people, whichever lasted longer. [2]
The census record
In 1911 Grange had forty-one inhabitants, twenty-one male and twenty female, in ten occupied houses. Its population had been thirty-seven in 1891 and thirty-five in 1901. The return gave its area as 372 acres, one rood and six perches and placed it in Holycross parish and electoral division, within Holycross dispensary district and Thurles Poor Law Union. [3]
