A pair of bridges beside the townland records both early road engineering and later rebuilding.
These Irish name elements are associated with this record in the Logainm glossary.
An element’s translation is a clue, rather than a complete explanation of the name. Its form and meaning depend on local history and the full Irish name.
Twoford Bridges, beside Newtown’s southern edge, cross the River Suir. Both date from around 1800. One has four rounded stone arches; the other has four stone arches and a fifth opening rebuilt in concrete. The architectural inventory attributes the concrete replacement to damage during the Civil War. Limestone parapets and pointed cutwaters complete the bridges, which the records associate with Newtown, Monamoe and Glenbane Lower. [2] [3]
