Place & story

The first classrooms

Hugh Fenning’s 1990 Dominican history records St Saviour’s parish beginning in May 1975, when sixty-six corporation houses were occupied in the Ballybeg estate. Children initially attended classes in Holy Ghost House, a former hospital across the Cork Road. A prefabricated school was brought from Killea in 1976. The permanent sixteen-classroom school was ready in October 1977 and formally opened the following June. [2]

Building parish institutions

St Saviour’s Church was dedicated on 13 December 1981. Edward Brady and Associates designed it with a steeply sloping roof and a high wall behind the sanctuary. A sports hall also dates from 1981. Fenning credits the Good Shepherd Sisters, present in Ballybeg from 1978, with initiating the parish centre opened in 1986 for childcare, medical consultations and community meetings. [2]

Skills shared through gardening

Pavee Point’s account of a 2017 visit records Ballybeg Greens operating as a community garden and social enterprise. It combined horticultural training and employment opportunities with growing produce for the food industry. Visiting gardeners compared that model with their own project, making Ballybeg a place where practical community experience could be exchanged. [3]
