Place & story
A parish recorded under several names
The National Library of Ireland preserves Oylegate parish registers under several variant names, including Oilgate, Glanbryan, Glenbryan and Glenbrien. Its digitised microfilm includes marriages from 1803 and baptisms from 1804, with an interval between the early sequence ending in 1820 and records resuming in 1832. The catalogue places the parish in the Diocese of Ferns. These records document the wider parish community; their different headings should not be read as proof that the two villages are one settlement.[2]
The school built in 1929
Oylegate National School dates its present building to 1929 and records an extension in 1986. It stands just off the road between Enniscorthy and Wexford and serves the Oylegate–Glenbrien parish under the patronage of the Bishop of Ferns. The two building dates mark successive stages in the provision of local classrooms, with an early twentieth-century school enlarged rather than wholly replaced.[3]
People & connections
The 1946 club partnership
Oylegate and Glenbrien united their hurling clubs in 1946. Glenbrien had previously won senior county championships in 1915 and 1916; the combined club's senior title followed in 1963. Its captain that year was Patrick Nolan, also an All-Ireland-winning goalkeeper with Wexford. When the club reached another senior county final in 2023, secretary Séamus Heffernan recalled the surviving 1963 players and plans to bring them together at Wexford Park. That reunion connected a new generation's campaign with the earlier team's achievement.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
