Place & story

A divided river town

Enniscorthy spreads across the Slaney. Lewis’s 1837 entry places St Mary’s parish on one side and Templeshannon on the other, describing a town whose streets and institutions developed on both banks. [2]

Castle and property histories

The directory follows claims involving the Prendergasts, the bishop of Ferns, the Kavanaghs and later grantees. The castle’s history is consequently also a history of property rights and jurisdiction. Lewis repeats competing attributions about its origin, which require independent architectural evidence before one builder is named confidently. A succession of owners does not prove that every household in the town belonged to those families or had a direct connection to the castle. [2]

People & connections

Eileen Gray at Brownswood

The designer and architect Eileen Gray was born at Brownswood near Enniscorthy in 1878. The castle museum’s exhibition connects that local birthplace with her later work in London and France. Her childhood surname was Smith; her family’s later adoption of Gray followed her mother’s inheritance of a Scottish title. The Dictionary of Irish Architects distinguishes this family history from her subsequent professional identity. [3] [4]

Gray settled in Paris in 1902 and became known for furniture, interiors and modernist architecture. The Enniscorthy exhibition includes her lacquer work and carpets alongside the better-known steel-and-glass table and Bibendum chair. [3] [4]
