Place & story

Burton Park’s changing house

The University of Galway's Landed Estates account records the destruction of the Percevals' original Burton Park house during the Jacobite War of 1689–91. A late Georgian replacement was built for an Earl of Egmont and subsequently remodelled in the late nineteenth century. The record leaves uncertainty over which earl commissioned the replacement. It was leased to the Purcells during the nineteenth century. [2]

People & connections

Matthew Purcell and his family

The Reverend Mathew Purcell was rector of Churchtown and lived at Burton Park. In 1800 he married Elizabeth Leader of Mount Leader; they had a son and eight daughters. Their son John occupied Burton Park in the early 1850s, when the house was valued at £34. At Griffith's Valuation his landholding included property in Churchtown leased from Sir Edward Tierney and land in Clonfert leased from the Earl of Cork. [3] [2]

The manor’s court

Samuel Lewis described a court for the manor of Burton meeting every three weeks in 1837. Its jurisdiction covered several parishes, with powers to recover debts up to forty shillings in the former Irish currency. The manor therefore reached beyond Churchtown's civil boundary. Lewis also recorded the Earl of Egmont as the owner of most of the parish, connecting local landownership with this wider administrative framework. [4]
