Place & story
A wall of remembrance
The Shillelagh Union Road PURE Mile group’s account describes local resident Annette Nolan drawing attention to the overgrown fever-hospital site and graveyard. Council workers cleared vegetation and planted trees. The group sought volunteers to restore the graveyard wall and build a remembrance wall from stones of the former buildings. A commemorative stone marked the wall’s unveiling on 17 August 2013, at the beginning of Heritage Week. The project gave a visible focus to remembrance at the former workhouse complex. [2]
