Place & story

The creek and the Murrough

Lewis describes the town above the Vartry outlet, beside a narrow creek separated from the sea by the coastal strip he calls the Murragh. His 1837 account notices the shifting sand and pebbles along the shore. Harbour access and the shape of the waterfront were therefore affected by water and beach material, rather than fixed permanently by a street plan. The elevated ground behind the port supplied a contrasting setting for the town and its defences. [2]

People & connections

Robert Halpin and ocean communications

Robert Halpin was born in Wicklow in 1836 and began his seafaring career as a boy. He became associated with the Great Eastern and the laying of submarine telegraph cables, helping connect distant continents. The county heritage account traces his beginnings in a dockside tavern and his later residence at Tinakilly near Rathnew. His story links a small port with the infrastructure of global communications, while distinguishing the town of his birth from the nearby house of his later years. [3]

A memorial in Fitzwilliam Square

The granite obelisk commemorating Halpin was erected in 1897. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage identifies the designer as county surveyor Carter Draper and the carvers as Robinson and Sons of Belfast. The monument turns a maritime career into a visible part of the town’s streetscape. It belongs to a group of local places associated with Halpin, including the inn, his burial place and other buildings, rather than standing as an isolated civic ornament. [4]

Folklore & tradition

Mantan and a rejected landing

Local tradition tells of Patrick and his companions receiving a hostile welcome near Wicklow, with one companion losing teeth in the encounter. The story associates that figure, Mantan, with the town’s early church. County heritage historian Stan O’Reilly also records a later punning explanation of the English name through the phrase “wicked low”, and explicitly rejects it as an etymology. [5] [6]
