Place & story
An estate changes hands
Dublin City Council traces Bushy Park’s origins to Arthur Bushe’s property in 1700. John Hobson acquired it in 1772 and changed its name to Bushy Park. Abraham Wilkinson bought the estate in 1791, enlarged it and presented it to his daughter Maria when she married Robert Shaw in 1796. The Shaws’ connection lasted until the estate was sold to Dublin Corporation in 1951. [2]
The standing house
The architectural inventory dates Bushy Park House to about 1760. Its two storeys stand above a basement, with a full-height bow on each side and a hipped slate roof behind a parapet. The survey records later use as a convent and highlights the unusually tall first-floor windows. [3]
