Place & story
Schooling recorded in 1837
Samuel Lewis’s 1837 account of Tynan parish records a school for boys and girls at Derryhaw. He distinguishes it from the rector’s school and the Erasmus Smith school in Tynan village. The reference establishes local schooling before the later dates in the trust’s catalogue; it does not identify the building now standing on Derryhaw Road in Tynan as Derryhaw’s own school. [2]
The trust’s support
The Erasmus Smith Schools Archive records support for Derryhaw sanctioned in 1840, naming the Rev. W. McClean as patron. Its entry notes a salary grant in 1857 and correspondence dating from 1857 to 1908. The catalogue’s 1910 discontinuation date concerns the trust’s recorded involvement and should not automatically be taken as the end of all schooling in the locality. [3]
