Place & story
Why Ardmore Church is in Derryadd
The August 1910 Seagoe Parish Magazine explains the apparent mismatch between the church’s name and its location. Ardmore Church stood in Derryadd townland, it noted, because the district’s first church had been built in Ardmore. The familiar name continued after the church moved. This Derryadd belongs to the Montiaghs area, distinct from the same-named townland in Tartaraghan parish. [2] [4]
Building and enlarging the church
The Irish Architectural Archive dates the new Church of Ireland building in Derryadd to 1785. Its record lists a vestry added in 1825 and further works advertised in 1861 under the direction of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners’ architects. A proposed gallery design by Joseph Welland survives in the RCB Library, although the catalogue gives it no date. [3]
Replacing the spire
In 1886, alterations included a new spire replacing one blown down three years earlier. The chancel was rearranged and a new pulpit provided. Bright Brothers of Portadown were the contractors. These recorded changes distinguish the late nineteenth-century work from the church’s original eighteenth-century construction. [3]
