Place & story

Women’s football at High Moss

High Moss Sarsfields was formed in 1926. Its ladies’ football team began in the club’s seventy-fifth-anniversary year, after local players encouraged its formation in 2000. The LGFA’s club account places the first competitive season in 2001, in Armagh’s second league division and Junior Championship. This new football team followed earlier periods of women’s camogie at Sarsfields in the 1930s, 1970s and 1980s, extending a long local tradition of women’s sport. [2]

People & connections

Kevin McAlinden’s community work

Kevin McAlinden played for Sarsfields and Armagh at minor and senior level, later serving in the club’s administration. On his death in 2023, the club recalled his Armagh Clubman of the Year award in 1983 and his contribution to building the community hall in the late 1980s. He was also a céilí-band musician and played with St Mary’s Pipe Band, travelling with it to Savannah for St Patrick’s Day celebrations in 1987. [3]

The Derrytrasna Pastoral Care Award

St Mary’s Primary School gave its name to an award extending well beyond the village. Plans were announced during an education minister’s visit in June 2013, and the awards launched in 2014. The Department of Education credited the school’s exceptional care for a seriously ill pupil as their inspiration. The scheme recognised schools’ collective support for pupils and families, with a preschool category subsequently added alongside primary and post-primary awards. [4]
