Place & story
Linen at Taghnevan
The McCaw family began a small linen business at Taghnevan around 1830. Later, the partnership of R J McCaw and Harry Allan combined production experience with a sales operation in London. By the firm’s golden jubilee in 1954 the factory employed about 250 people. Its anniversary celebrations included workers who had joined in 1904 and remained for fifty years. [2]
A community meeting place
In 2013 Taghnevan Community Development Association described the Youth and Community Centre and St Paul’s Gaelic Football Club as important local gathering places. The association brought young people, mothers and older residents together for discussions about education and employment. Working with the club, it also consulted young people about leisure activities and developed vocational training and advice initiatives. [3]
