Place & story

The name of a wider manor

A transcription published by Rosalind Hadden records a grant dated 13 July 1632 to Prudence Obyns and her son John Obins. Ballyoran was among the lands constituted as the Manor of Ballyoran, which also included Garvaghy and other neighbouring places. The grant provided for manor courts and markets at Portadown. Hadden explains that her text passed through several copies, preserving evidence whose original documents are no longer available to her. [2]

Opening a school during the Troubles

Ballyoran Primary School opened in 1974 to serve new housing estates in northwest Portadown. Its first principal, Jack Gilpin, recalled that population movements and growing segregation during the Troubles had unsettled the original enrolment forecasts. The school opened unfinished, with 116 children on its first day. Gilpin described its purpose as bringing children together through voluntary attendance and respect for different religious backgrounds. [3]

A place for community activity

The school quickly became more than a classroom building. Gilpin’s recollections describe a youth activity centre serving around a hundred children on two evenings each week by May 1976. Its assembly hall accommodated local organisations before the community centre opened on Garvaghy Road. Pax Christi summer schemes also brought international volunteers to stay in unused rooms, connecting local children’s activities with visitors from several countries. [3]
