Place & story

A house on the nineteenth-century map

The historic-building survey dates the house at 50 Farlough Road to between 1835 and 1860, using its appearance on the revised Ordnance Survey map. In the 1862 valuation, James Litter occupied the property and Dawson Tate was the immediate lessor. The adjoining outbuilding was apparently added later. [2]

Thatch and local craftsmanship

The single-storey house has whitened walls, a timber half-door beneath a small thatched porch, and a thatched outbuilding at right angles to it. Recorded roof work involved R. Stevenson in the early 1980s and Gerald Agnew in later repairs. Thatcher George Topping added a decorative cut ridge during his work in the 1990s. The survey notes that this ridge differs from the house’s earlier thatching style. [2]
