Place & story

A fort north of the village

Pamela Marshall's history distinguishes Mountnorris village from the earlier fort about a mile to its north. The fort was considered for incorporation as a charter town in 1613, but the scheme did not proceed. Plans for a Royal School near Mountnorris likewise failed to produce a school in the village. [2]

Fair days and a bypassed road

Mountnorris held a livestock fair on the second Monday of each month until about 1840. The settlement had stood on the main coaching road between Newry and Armagh, but a new route bypassing it restricted its growth. Water-powered flax and corn mills developed in the surrounding district. [2]
