Aughinish’s military past links its limestone Martello tower with the causeway joining Clare to County Galway.
A reliable full-name meaning has not been established here. The recorded Irish and English forms are given without an unsupported translation.
The Martello tower on Aughinish Island was built in the early nineteenth century as part of the defences of Galway Bay. Its oval plan differs from the more familiar round towers of the east coast. Thick limestone walls rise to a parapet, while a vaulted brick ceiling and central stone support carried the weight of the gun platform above. [2] [3]
The causeway between Aughinish and Geehy North in County Galway was built to carry materials for the tower. Emer Murphy’s county heritage account identifies the county boundary halfway along the road. The crossing divides Aughinish Bay from the open waters of Galway Bay, giving the island a road connection through Galway despite its Clare identity. [4]
