Place & story

A farm divided between generations

An indenture dated 14 October 1802 records Samuel Donaldson transferring interests in land at Cloghoge and neighbouring Freeduff to his son William. The document recites an earlier division of Alexander Donaldson’s Cloghoge farm between Samuel and Joseph. Alongside rents and family arrangements, it preserves practical rights: tenants were to retain access to turf-cutting ground and a route for taking their fuel away. The deed makes bogland part of the working farm economy as well as the family’s inheritance. [2]

Oats, potatoes and planted pasture

The nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey name book describes Cloghoge as a large townland crossed by minor roads, with bog and uncultivated ground alongside fields of oats and potatoes. Its surveyors also noted pasture around the Wallace and Donaldson residences, with trees and shrubs giving that part of the locality a different appearance. The account records contrasting uses of land within one townland, from small cultivated plots and fuel ground to more deliberately planted surroundings. [3]
