Place & story
St Laurence's layered church
St Laurence's Church combines a medieval stone tower, probably of the fifteenth century, with a nave rebuilt in 1859 and later additions. Its enclosed churchyard lies behind the village streets, reached by narrow lanes. Sheridan Le Fanu used this setting in The House by the Churchyard, giving the village a lasting place in nineteenth-century fiction. [2]
Linen beside the Liffey
The Duke of Ormond's activities in the 1660s helped shape the later village. Dublin City Council's conservation account records the establishment of a Leinster bleaching yard at Chapelizod and an army linen-supply contract for a local factory. The Phoenix Park's southern boundary wall, built beside the road to Dublin in 1681, further defined the settlement's surroundings. [3]
A chapel for the mill community
The former Presbyterian church at 1–2 New Row was built around 1845 for mill workers living in New Row and Maiden Row. Its manse stood alongside, with an internal doorway linking the minister's house and church. Although the building later became a preschool, its tall arched windows distinguish it from the neighbouring homes and preserve a trace of the industrial community's religious life. [4]
