An element’s translation is a clue, rather than a complete explanation of the name. Its form and meaning depend on local history and the full Irish name.
A ruined church dating from about 1200 stands within an older ecclesiastical enclosure on White Island in Lower Lough Erne. Its Romanesque south doorway was reconstructed in 1928. Carved figures, older than the church, were later placed against its north wall; one carries a bell and a crosier. The Department for Communities also records an early grave slab displayed at the site. [2]
