Place & story
Volunteer corps in the countryside
Lewis’s 1837 account records John Dickey raising the Cullybackey Volunteers in 1778. T. Hill of Drumra organised the Portglenone Volunteers the following year, while Alexander McManus of Mount Davies raised an Ahoghill corps. These associations belong to the wider historical parish and its neighbourhood. Portglenone and twenty-one townlands had become a separate parish in 1825, so the eighteenth-century connections should not be read as a map of the later parish boundary. [2]
John Guy’s Moravian bequest
John Guy left an annual bequest of twelve pounds to the Moravian establishment in 1813. Lewis recorded that the death of Guy’s adopted heir had increased the yearly payment to forty-five pounds by 1837. The same account identifies the Moravian meeting house at Gracehill among the area’s places of worship. This specific act of patronage connects Guy with the community’s institutional support, without requiring a claim that he founded the settlement. [2]
Schools and the parish glebe
Education was spread among fifteen parish schools teaching about 730 boys and girls, twelve private schools with roughly 450 pupils, and sixteen Sunday schools in Lewis’s account. The rector’s glebe-house had been built in 1815 with a Board of First Fruits grant and loan. Lewis also described the older parish church’s walls being raised and a new roof added, recording investment in religious buildings alongside the network of classrooms. [2]
