Place & story
The record of an early burial
Lambeg parish identifies Margaret Wilson’s gravestone, dated 24 April 1626, as its oldest surviving example. The churchyard also contains monuments to families involved in local textile manufacture. William Cassidy recorded its inscriptions in 1937, preserving information that later weathering or the disappearance of stones could otherwise have removed from the historical record. [2]
Clergy from several traditions
The parish’s churchyard account names Methodist preacher John Johnson, who died in 1803, and his wife Dorothea, who died in 1817. It also records the burials of Derriaghy Catholic priests Magee and John Mullan. Their stones have disappeared, but recorded inscriptions preserve their presence within a burial ground used by more than one denomination. [2]
From E.M.B. Hall to Hilden Centre
John Milne Barbour built the E.M.B. Memorial Hall at Hilden in 1911 in memory of his wife Elise. It passed to Railway Street Presbyterian Church in 1912 and hosted Sunday schools, gatherings and gymnastics. Lambeg parish bought it in 1996. Following its demolition, the Hilden Centre opened on the same site in 2001, continuing the location’s community use. [3]
