Place & story

A domed tomb dated 1837

The Stephenson mausoleum in Kilbride Cemetery bears the date 1837 on its iron door. The Historic Environment Division records a rectangular granite building with a central bulbous dome, small finials and pointed recesses. Its cast-iron entrance door has six panels and branching tracery. The survey identifies Rowan as the maker whose name appears on the doors, while leaving the building’s architect unknown. [2]

People & connections

A surgeon remembered in stone

One memorial panel commemorates Samuel Martin Stephenson, superintending surgeon in the Madras Presidency, who died in July 1834 aged fifty. His overseas medical career is recorded on the monument itself. The survey describes the mausoleum as commemorating four Ulster medical men and members of their family. [2]
